I Made a List (Top 10 Games that Should Be Remastered)

Thought I’d try something a bit different today. We seem to live in a world of nostalgia, a real wanting for the good old days in everything it seems. ‘TV is terrible’ ‘kids don’t go outside anymore’ ‘things aren’t made like they’re used to’ and I thought I’d tap into that. I love a remake, if it’s done well, and the success of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro remasters in the last few years have brought through a whole host of older titles getting the HD remake or being brought to new consoles. With no signs of slowing as this summer we will get a dusting off of Destroy All Humans and Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, let’s see, what in my opinion (I can’t stress that enough), should be brought into 4K

(Small disclaimer, all the games can’t have been announced to be remastered like the potential remasters of the Mario games Nintendo recently announced. This is a list of games I’d love to see, however rumoured games with no official announcement do make the list)

No. 10: Left 4 Dead

At number 10 we have the classic zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, and let’s bundle in Left 4 Dead 2 here as well, arguably the best zombie shoot them ups made. Fans of the series have been yearning for Valve to announce a third instalment, but seeing as the company seem to have a mortal fear of anything that has the number 3 in it so how about a nice compromise and do a remaster of the old games. I can’t lie that if you boot up this game you’ll be greeted with a rather muddy looking mess and it is crying out to be made for a new generation of console.

Likelihood: This one really is who knows. Valve aren’t one for giving fans what they want (looking at you Half Life 3) but this outlook might be changing... there are a lot of mods for this game on PC so if it was ever to happen, I’d think they’d wait a while for the technology and give us a VR experience.

No. 9: A Dogs Life

Please don’t close off the list, I promise I’ve not lost my mind. I’ll admit this one is more of a niche choice and one really just for me. A dogs life was a stupid stupid game and if I’m fully honest I’m not 100% sure on the plot. All I remember was having a lot of fun. I mean how many other games allowed you to be a dog I first person doing all things a dog would do? I know I want it, but the list probably stops there

Likelihood: None, genuinely none at all, it’s just me who wants this game, it’s not happening.

No. 8: Timesplitters

Number 8 belongs to Timesplitters (or again the Timesplitters series). These games were fantastic, the storylines were decent in the single player, but the reason we’d love to see this again is for the frantic multiplayer. The vast maps, packed with characters all shooting and trying to be the best. This game could easily have 30+ people playing in one game and personally I’d love to see it, I’d love to play it, and I’m not alone. The only reason this game made the list is when doing research, I saw the name of this game pop up quite a few times.

Likelihood: Honestly, I’d say dead in the water. As much as I think this would be a huge sell, it’s is in legal limbo and right now I can’t see a way out of it. HD remakes of all 3 games would make a great bundle and money talks, so never say never.

No 7: Pokémon Colosseum

Time for a Nintendo title. I will be honest, this is the only Nintendo exclusive to make the list. I did have Mario 64 on the list until a few weeks back, And as for the Pokémon games, there are remakes of a lot titles, such as Red and Green or Gold and Silver. So I decided to start off the path of traditional Pokémon games and go with colosseum as the game I want remastered. This game was fantastic and to have a Pokémon game a bit different and simply put, I think a new game in this style with the amount of new Pokémon added in and make it HD, I’ll just accept my royalty check now please.

Likelihood: Like a lot so far on this list, low. I wouldn’t say it’s fully out of the realms of possibility, but that being said if it did get done, it would just be a flat out, HdD remake. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new title like this in the next few years though so maybe.

No. 6: Tony Hawk Pro Skater

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good Tony Hawk game. If you’re like me, I spent a lot of my life wanting desperately to be able to skate and listen to punk rock all day. However I had no skill and gave up pretty quick so next best thing, play a video game and listen to punk rock. Sorted. Granted the Tony Hawk franchise has taken quite the battering of late and I remake would breath life back into it. I know it love to be grinding in the school level, or tearing up the mall again, and to have it in HD, yes, now please.

Likelihood: A couple of weeks ago I’d have simply said that this was done and booting up a PS1 would be the only way to enjoy it, but after hearing rumours a new games in the works, hopefully some bright spark will think of remastering the original to boost interest in any future title. Also seeing how every game conference seems to demand Skate 4 this might do the trick.

No.5: Oblivion

I must admit, I’m really only putting this one forward as I’ve been playing the Skyrim remaster whilst I’ve been in lockdown and during this I thought to myself ‘Oblivion is a good game’ so I loaded it up and to put it bluntly it looked like garbage. Now that doesn’t mean it’s not a great game but I personally would love to see how this game would look I 4K. This game had amazing quests but was let down by a lack of detail when it came to its open world and this could be greatly improved if redone. Also I’d rather see this brought out rather than another copy of Skyrim that you can play in a fridge.

Likelihood: This one really sits in the ‘who knows’ category. I wouldn’t say it won’t happen but to be honest, it’s probably at the very bottom of the list in things Bethesda would like to do

No.4: Need For Speed Underground 2

As with Skate 4, a remaster of this has often been shouted for at every E3, with every passing iteration of Need for Speed the fan base seems to get less and less, so what’s the best way to fix that? Well why not tap into that nostalgia well and being up the memories of Rider in the Storm and speeding around a city in a super tuned Peugeot 106. The thing is despite this game being over 15 years old nothing would need to change, give us the same cars, the same music and we’ll all be happy.

Likelihood: A solid maybe. But as it’s EA I’d fully expect a modern version with cars locked behind paywall for different cars. Which isn’t what we want but probably what we’ll get. As for getting a like for like remake, I doubt it. We can dream but remember it’s EA.

No.3: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Moving on to number 3 and we start moving into the realms of potential possibility. It’s been 10 years since we’ve seen a Prince of Persia game. 10 years!! Well unless you count the mobile game from 2 years ago, which I don’t for purposes of this list. Out of the title released under the Prince of Persia banner this one is the obvious stand out. So 15 years after this one came out it’s time for a reboot. Clearly I’m not alone as there is a new title in the works but a released to get us remembering why this series is loved wouldn’t go amiss.

Likelihood: I wouldn’t say too bad, as I’ve mentioned before, reports of a new game are starting to swirl. A remaster maybe to test the waters of interest wouldn’t be the worst idea. But ultimately competition will drive the best out of games and keeping someone like, maybe, God of War on their toes might not be too bad.

No. 2: Bully

Number 2, and for me we have one the most criminally underrated games to game out during the Original Xbox/PlayStation 2 era (and the 360/PlayStation 3 as well). Bully was a game that immediately got the original Karen brigade up in arms. You think they’re bad now, remember the video game violence lot in 2006? But despite that being the focus of the media, this game had so much more. It had a fantastic amount of things to do and even the fact you had a school timetable to factor in was somehow genius. And now all the kids who’s parents wouldn’t buy them the game when it first came out could be a good payday.

Likelihood: I think I’m living in hope, but again this has had rumours of a sequel since the the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 came out. Personally, I don’t think a sequel is exactly the right way to go, but a remaster when the next generation of consoles land, I could see it.

No. 1: The Simpson’s Hit and Run

Here’s the winner and strangely it’s not because this was a good game, but instead because I played it recently and this game is now very underwhelming, (I prefer Road Rage fir the record) it’s repetitive and to be honest not very good anymore. But this game was a huge part of a lot of people of my generations childhood and was always in the collection of everyone, regardless of what console. It deserves another run, updated and polished for the modern day. We all long for old Simpson’s and releasing a remaster would be the easiest source of money since Bitcoin.

Likelihood: 50/50. I could easily see this being announced tomorrow but at the same time I valued easily see it being nothing more than a pipe dream we all remember when we’re old and grey. Or slightly more accurate, older and greyer. But there is obvious demand and and easy payday would be the other side of any remaster.

So that’s the list. As said before this is a personal opinion of what I’d like to see remastered and as I have no actual sway with video game higher ups, not a list of upcoming remasters. As always let me know your thoughts on what you’d like to see remastered here, and follow me on Twitter @peterlinsdell for new articles as I release them.
