Have you ever sat back and wondered what would happen if you crossed the Hitman Series, Metal Gear Solid, got rid of the violence (mostly) and made the main protagonist a goose?? Me too!! So that why I played Untitled Goose Game, the surprise 2019 smash hit developed by House House and published by Panic. This is a short game (around the 3/4 hour mark) in which you control a goose through a few scenarios and get up to a lot of mischief.
I was very very excited when I saw this game was coming to consoles, I’m yet to get round to owning a switch and this game took off (excuse the bird pun). I was even more excited when I saw this game was coming to game pass as yet again Microsoft giving us the content we needed and letting us have this title in its catalogue as soon as it was released on the system.
So how does the game work? Sort of as I’ve already described, you’re a goose and you’re up to no good, there are I’d say four and a bit levels to work through, they are; the garden, the high street, the back gardens and the pub. Each level has a to-do list to complete before moving into the next area. These tasks are generally causing the NPCs of the area great frustration and you will end up stealing from them, causing them grief and occasionally a bit of pain... (especially the poor young boy on the high street... I still feel bad).
We have our premise, all very straight forward bout how does game handle?? Very very well, at no point in playing did I find myself getting annoyed or frustrated at how the game handled, it’s key is it’s simplicity, there’s no need for holding down multiple buttons for huge amounts of time or having to contort fingers to make your goose do certain things and this allows us to enjoy the charm of this game.
The game is very much humour focused and I found myself laughing at the things I was doing, at times you could just imagine someone sitting in their back yard, terrorised by an annoying goose and it being filmed and becoming a viral sensation. It’s silly, very silly but if it was any other way it wouldn’t work. Without the humour it’s pointless, but go too far the other way and we have another Goat Simulator clone. Don’t get me wrong I love Goat Simulator, but this game doesn’t need to imitate anything. It’s a fantastic game all on its own and I think anyone who plays it will enjoy a few hours of silliness.
The art style works too, I think if it looked any other way then the game doesn’t quite fit, sure it’d be fine but it keeps the game looking childlike with its colours and that’s a perfect fit for what we have here, also it’s set in the UK and for some reason that gives it added whimsy which I can’t help but give points too.
This being said it’s short, as I said it’s around 3/4 hours long and that if you explore everything, if you just stuck to the tasks I dare say you’d be done in maybe 90 minutes. Short games aren’t a bad thing, but I feel asking over £15 is a bit of an ask for a game of this length, no matter how good it is. If you’re looking to complete everything then you get a bit extra with its speedrun mode but even then this is meant to be completed in under half an hour.
And that’s it, a lot shorter then a few of my previous ones but I can’t really say much more about this game, it’s fun, you should absolutely play this game if you get the chance, it’s so much fun in it’s simplicity. Do I think it’s worth the price?? No, I’ll be honest I think it’s steep, but that easy for me to say from behind my controller not knowing the work that went into the game, I’d say if it’s in offer then grab it, or you know as I keep banging on about it, get Xbox Game Pass and download it along with loads of other great games. Simply put, find a way to play this game, just maybe not for £16.74.
9/10
